1 Timothy 5
This chapter is all about how the body of Christ should treat others and behave in the church.
-
Describe how verses 1-2 say we should treat each other in the church.
-
Verses 3-6 talk about how a widow should behave if they still have some family. Summarize the behavior described by Paul.
-
What does verses 3-8 say how those that are not widows should behave?
-
Verses 9-13 discuss the topic of enrolling widows. This meant that certain widows would be eligible to receive financial support from the church. From verse 9-11 what are the qualifications for enrolling a widow?
-
In verses 11-16 Paul discusses the topic of younger widows. He clearly says in verse 11 to refuse to enroll younger widows. Why does he say this? Give at least 3 reasons.
-
Much of this behavior discussed so far could be applied not only to widows but others as well. What is something from the text so far that you desire or should desire to grow in?
-
Looking at verses 17-18, do you actively consider your elders worthy of double honor?
-
Describe the commands given in verses 19-20.
-
There is a short interjection from Paul in verse 23 to tell Timothy to use a little wine to make his stomach feel better, wine back then was very different than it is now, for instance, it was more watered down and had less alcohol. Apart from that interjection, verses 21-25 explain more about how to deal with sin in the church. What do you find interesting in this section? Is there anything that could be applied to your own life?
